The Cathedral and the Bazaar

With this chapter i would like to emphasis what I have learned after reading and even before reading this chapter. I want to emphais the word “passion” from this time. why? this is because I find the person who is talking to this chapter is a passionate guy. After reading I’ve learned that The amount of achievement that you accomplished as a business or as a company or as an organization which is determined by their commitment but the quality of their output is determined by the passion that they have put behind it. Passion is not simply doing things with a dire desire for excellence and difference. It is the attitude that pushes a company or a business not to settle for anything less than the best possible results of a certain goal.

This is the fire that keeps them warm and conditioned in everything that they do. It is a feeling and a voice within them saying “let’s go! Let’s do it!, lets do it perfectly! “For peoTo this thsis ple and just for people. It is the energy that makes them feel good at night, realizing that you have done something meaningful and there’s no more to come.

Cathedral and Bazaar (Brief History of Hackerdom)

Obviously this simply explains the history of hackers. And so before reading this page I really expect that this book will help me realized what are hackers what are their use in the information technology world or environment, and moreover are they useful in the society especially in the world of information and computers? do we really need them?

From the very start what i knew about hackers is that they are those people who are trying to ruin or to break  information’s, applications and the like. Meaning they are those who are doing works illegally, because they want to get or to own something that is forbidden and the like.

And so after reading this page or after reading this chapter i may say that it is true enough and this book has a point, that indeed most of the IT people or even those who are related to technology or computers are those individual who are also trying to learn hacking methods or being hackers, in order also for them to know how is it going to solve and might as well protect themselves to those hackers also.

We cannot deny the fact that the origin of hackers in the society was really amazing and really unexpected because it is true enough that people are getting smarter when it comes to technology through the years.

Cathedral and Bazaar (Introduction)

It is obvious enough that when we read the introduction of a certain book like this book, we can say that it tells you the summary or the content of what this book is all about. And so based from what I have read, with thie introduction of this book i may say that it has a very deep and reliable information about open source, information  technology economy, digital age, computer software’s and hardware’s and and the like.

This also says, this will also tackles about the hackers, as well as their cultures, their tribes, their activities, objectives and a lot more. According to this, this books is has also a collections of essays that explains everything and anything about the topic that they have for the readers and later on readers like me will eventually find the secret as to why this book was entitled ” The Cathedral and the Bazaar”.

As I remembered Mr. Paul Pajo told us that we were lucky and we were advance because we have the chance to read this book. And so I am hoping that I will be lucky through understanding the message of the book through it’s chapters.

Getting Real: Chapter 16(Conclusion)

This is the last chapter of the book getting real and to this last chapter, it sum up all the things, all the information’s and all the learning that we’ve read gathered from this book.

And with regards to what I’ve learned; is the importance and power of passion, skills, motivations, etc. All this things are the formula for you to achieve success in your application. Another thing would be the value of customers. Meaning being customer driven, knowing how to deal, how to listen and how to be honest, transparent, and connected to them can really make a big difference for you as a developer and as well as to the entire applications. This thing would make you and thought you how to be open to public, and not keeping your application in a box, and not reachable.

And when it comes to executions it says that the difference between you and everyone else will be how well you execute. Success is all about great execution.  And the key is balance. If you tilt too far in one direction, you’re headed for failure. Constantly seek out your weak links and focus on them

I do agree that in building an application there are lots of ingredients for you to build it successfully just like in cooking, and so in along building it even if it’s done already i do believe that people was the main and the best ingredients of it. Because they are the consumers, the customers and the user, or future users of your applications. “You need people who are passionate about what they do. People who care about their craft – and actually think of it as a craft. People who take pride in their work, regardless of the monetary reward involved.”

And so to end this up Getting Real i may say is that a very interesting, fruitful and reliable for all the readers of it especially those people who are in the field of IT or in the field of technology. I’m glad that i do read this book, i do finished it. I do learned a lot of things because this book serves as an eye opener as well as a guide for those who wants to start building applications in the future. This book is highly recommended for all the book driven and technology driven.

Getting Real: Chapter 15(Post-Launch)

To this chapter, it’s started with reminding us the essence of the word “update” meaning quick update means a lot to the side of customers, this would really means that your listening, you still care, you show momentum and you put the focus on the most crucial components before launch. It makes you start perfecting the your application before you launch it to public and through this time, this will be the starting point for you to get comments and feedbacks to customers.

I do agree that in blogging can make your app alive in the people and as well as in the market, and it also makes your company seem human. Meaning people can see it, can feel it, and identify it. Because in blogging, people can monitor the updates and the developments about your products. They have the assurance that through blogging, that your application can exist and still existing. That’s why its better if you should not stop blogging once you launch. Show your product is a living creature by keeping a dedicated blog that you update frequently.

Beta according to this chapter was not that useful enough, not perfect enough. because there are beta applications that are not reliable for customer to use, but according to it, you can free to use it but if it’s not perfect, it’s not their fault. And so meaning not all beta’s are good; private betas are fine, public betas are “bullshit”. Another thing would be is that i do agree that nothing can come into perfection because in the first place there is no perfect thing that’s why you don’t have to wait that your app would come to be perfect but take responsibility for what you’re releasing. Put it out and call it a release. Otherwise, you’re just making excuses.

Sometimes bugs makes us panic, gets us irritated, and really makes our life hustle. And so we cannot deny the fact that all software has bugs. We bug can be fix but not all of the, that’s why this chapter says that you have to Prioritize your bugs (and even ignore some of them). Meaning fixed bugs that affects a lot of people and if it needs to fixed immediately. And you must also remember to still be honest to customers when this things happened, just explain everything and anything about what’s happening and what are you doing for you to addressed, solve and fixed this bugs.

I do agree that our passion really burns outs and really flares out when we hear comments, reactions and suggestions that is more louder and more powerful and is negative, because it is true enough that this thing would really make you strive for changes in your applications.

Competitions are anywhere, and everywhere that’s why it’s still better if you Subscribe to news feeds about both your product and your competitors (it’s always wise to know the ways of one’s enemy). In order for you to know how are you going to deal with them, with their products and also with the strategies they have.

And so keeping your application in a box could only means that your app is not flexible and open enough to some changes in the environment. And so you have to be open to the fact that your original idea may not be your best one. Figure out where the big waves are breaking and adjust accordingly.

Getting Real: Chapter 14(Support)

In the beginning of this chapter, this explains the value of customers and how you should deal with them. Because as we all know customers are the number one asset and the very important assets of a company. And so in the IT industry we have to listen to customers because it is the best way to get in tune with your product’s strengths and weaknesses. And it is also you Don’t outsource customer support to a call center or third party. you have to do it yourself. You, and your whole team, should know what your customers are saying. You should hear complaints from them because that would really help you to know how to deal with them as well as their complaints and suggestions about you app.

Zero training means that, avoiding of things to teach and help users to their questions on how to do this and that to your app manually because according to this chapter this can be done online, and so it’s true that it is zero training because you are answering people/ users questions online.

A lot of users or customers love to have a quick answer to whatever they asked or to what ever questioned they have. And they got angry and annoyed sometimes when answers show up late. That’s why this chapter suggest that even if you don’t have perfect answers, say something to them, at least you gave them information or answers that can be acceptable by your customers. Even if it’s not a perfect answer maybe you’ll also helped them and give them idea and some sort of solution to their questions.

We always say that “customer is always right”. I don’t agree in someways because customer really in the IT business or in an IT industry customer is not always right. Why? because noticed that if we are the developer of a certain applications and your customer loves to add a lot of features on to it, we say no or they say no(developer) because it will be complicated and moreover there will be no one would want to buy your product.  And so it’s better if we are willing and we should be willing to say “no” to our customers.

Adding forums and chat to your application can really make a big difference not only to your customer but might as well to you as a developer and to the entire application as well. Because your providing your time to go to another task that you want to process and moreover your allowing customers to help one another through asking questions not on you but to their co-customer and with this you are opening the communications and make it wide for them to get information from other sources. And so through this middle man can no longer be needed in the process.

It is true enough that if something goes wrong in your app or in the process make sure that you tell and allow people to know it. Because this would help people understand things that they encountered in your application, this would make them calm and relax whenever and wherever they are. And so it’s better if your going to be as open, honest, and transparent as possible don’t keep secrets or hide behind spin. An informed customer is your best customer. Plus, you’ll realize that most of your screw-up aren’t even that bad in the minds of your customers.

Getting Real: Chapter 13(Promotion)

This chapter starts through saying that Go from teaser to preview to launch meaning launch your applications to a place where there is market and where there is people who are interested to your product and also to a place that will make our application clicked to everyone. And so according to this chapter you have to have three things the teaser, preview and launch if you want to go with the so called ” Hollywood-style launch”.

Teaser: which means that even though your app is not yet done or still in the process you have to update future users on whats happening to your applications, and this is through posting it on a blog, advertise it etc. In order for you to start attracting and seducing future users of your applications, so that they long for it.

Preview: means giving people like screen shots, features and other things that is or that can be seen and visualized by your different users. And also Also, tell people about the ideas and principles behind the app.

And lastly launch which means your going to release and give your product to market, to people etc. Meaning at this point in time your application is now ready to use and now ready to distribute to different markets who waits and really interested p to your applications.

Even though your blogging your products, according to this chapter still you need to have a promotional sites too that would help you to get and find people who will but your app. and to this promotional sites you should include overview, tour, screen shots and videos, manifesto, case study, buzz, forum, pricing and sign-up and still Weblog.

To this chapter I do agree that advertising is more expensive than blogging. because blogging doesn’t need any amount any amount of money you should need to write and post interesting things about your product or about your apps, because blogging can be a form of advertising now. While advertising as we all know is costly because you have to pay for this and for that first before you app will be advertised in air ow even in the cloud. But if were going to compare the two in terns of their effectivity we can say that both can be effective but blogging is more efficient and productive and cheapest thing to do.

And when the subject you’re teaching is your app, it serves a dual purpose: You can give something back to the community that supports you and score some nice promotional exposure at the same time.”Meaning when you are promoting something this means that you are educating people you are providing people informations and facts that they’ve never learned before, that they don’t hear before and so through that you are also giving back something to the community in a way that they were exposed to something new and to something different in the technology that can be seen through your app or can be through the cloud as well.

Giving your app a name that;s easy to remember can be a big factor for your application to be remember by a lot of people/ users. Because it true enough that it is not necessary that the name of your app is as detailed as you want it to be, meaning names of app should not be ultra descriptive. Pick a name that’s short, catchy, and memorable and then run with it. And you can always be creative and get close with a couple of extra letters.

Getting Real: Chapter#12(Pricing and Signup)

Giving something that is free would really can attract lots of customers/consumers and more importantly those potential market. Because this was one way of introducing new product in the market, this can also be a way of testing a project/product as to how it works in the market. That’s why it’s true enough that “if the world heard it, they will pay for more.” Meaning if the world heard your product, this might lead to two things they patronized or they will ask and pay for more or in the worst case they might ignored it.

And when it comes to making sign up and cancellation a painless process–this states that whatever projects you have one of things that needs to be considered would be it’s being “ergonomic” and so meaning, for example in a site, site must be easy to understand on how to use it so that users could easily navigate/use the application or site.

Another in this chapter was avoiding the  long-term contracts, sign-up fees, etc. which means that different users or a lot of users was expecting to look for a site/application that they do understand or easy to understand and at the same time when it comes to deleting, updating, canceling something in the application or in the specific site they also find ease as to what they want in signing in the applications.

And last thing would be, when it comes to to this topic about Softening the blow of bad news with advance notice and grandfather clauses–this was about the consumer/customers and the price which only reminds that in giving news to the customers more over when it comes to increase in prices, this must be delivered in a soft manner that the consumers would understand why and how, so that they would not get disappointed/discouraged that much.

Getting Real: Chapter #11(Words )

The word “spec” correspond also to the word “features” because they do have both meanings that states and describes how certain products works/functions, meaning this is more of the design thing of a product.

And so we cannot we cannot deny the fact that writing features or aspects of a certain products was easy when planning only on what or how product would look like and it functions as well compare to other. But the real thing was it’s not easy or it’s hard really when it comes to the stage of building the product already.

I do agree that “specs” don’t deal with the reality once its o build something, because as programmers go through the process of building, everything really change. That’s why in order to avoid this things, getting real book, or this book suggested which i really like to do was first, go to briefer alternative that moves to something to reality. Which means that going into briefer alternative can help you focused and work on the real thing.

Second would be writing one page story about the application which really helps to understand and guide you as well, as you go through the different process of building. Next would be learning to use language that is plain and understandable. And so if this would be explain all in a page of paper this means that it’s not complex, it’s not hard, and there’s no long process that would encounter because this was easy, meaning apps was easy to build and implement as well

And lastly i want to focused on the things that really makes me think and at the same time that really make me learned when reading this chapter. “build, don’t write” for a long time documentation was important but this time I’ve noticed that the importance of it was not always applicable. This quote means although documentation/documenting were helpful enough for future purposes, to this chapter as to what I’ve understand is that, focused your mind and your body on building rather than to documenting all because documentation has different importance in the world of management and in the world of technology. Why? because in reality most especially in the market people sometimes don’t want to waste their time reading anything about the certain product because what they do want to see is that the functionality and the looks of the product.
